Exploring the Countries Involved

Nyx
  • Greek Goddess, personification of night

  • An up-and-coming country whose sudden, late involvement in the previous war helped place them on the map

  • A rather small country in terms of population and destiny, Nyx saw a massive flood of immigrants (mostly from North and South Eirene) after The Great War

  • Plenty of flat, fertile land makes Nyx a great place for agriculture

  • Their primary exports are wheat, rice, and other grains

  • They also produce and ship a lot of the world’s fruits and vegetables

  • They are a couple of years behind other countries in terms of scientific and technological development but are trying to catch up quickly

  • They cannot produce enough electronics and electronic parts to meet their own demands so they are forced to import them from other countries

  • Rapid expansion of cities, big boom in the economy

    • Economic boom mostly due to increased demand for food worldwide, especially in war torn areas

  • Rapidly growing economic disparity

  • Increase in building and expansion of cities has led to higher taxes

  • Homelessness increases as the cost of living increases but the salary does not increase to match

  • Nyx recently sank a few billion dollars into a new university in the capital with hopes that it will attract the brightest minds in the world to help speed up technological, scientific, and medical advancements

  • Recently funded a nuclear power research project to see if nuclear power and nuclear weapons are possible

  • Hundreds of billions of dollars going toward the military and creation/research of new military weapons and technology

  • With the increase in technology there has been an increase in domestic surveillance

  • Civil unrest with rising economic disparity, increased surveillance, and talks about starting another war

    • This has led to the formation of a “terrorist” organization trying to fight injustice and spread awareness of the prejudice and surveillance

Themis
  • Formerly part of the Eirene Empire after they took over at the start of The Great War

  • Territory was given back as part of the peace treaty

  • Themis is the goddess who personifies justice, fairness, and law

  • High class and advanced society, well educated

  • Thick forest to the west along the border between Themis and North Eirene

  • Big mining and lumber industries

  • A lot of caves and mountains to the North where they mine ore

  • Very big electronics/microelectronics industry

    • World’s leading producer and exporter of microelectronics

  • Current President has done much to combat economic inequality

  • Very progressive ideology

    • Separation of church and state

    • Combating racial, gender, and economic inequality

    • Recently elected president encouraging young people into politics

  • “The Cleaners” are a group of government agents that work to silently combat domestic terrorism by dealing with problems quickly and quietly so the public isn’t aware they occurred in the first place

  • Beautiful landscape and scenery, well maintained national parks

  • High class culture that values the arts, science and nature

  • Honor is of the utmost importance in Themis. Everyone treated each other with respect

  • A lot of money goes to schools and recreational centers for kids

  • A lot of money also goes into the military for research and development purposes

  • Rapid scientific and technological development, some of which is kept secret by the government

  • Gets extremely cold in the winter, especially up North

  • Not a lot of good terrain for agriculture, a lot of food is imported

Themis before and during the first war (as part of the Eirene Empire)

  • Monarchy ruled by a family who has held the throne for 300 years

    • After being taken over by the Eirene Empire, the monarchy was allowed to stay but had very little power

  • Monarchy was aided by a Parliament in charge of budgeting and passing laws

    • Every decision made by Parliament needed the approval of the monarchy

  • Monarchy was mostly focused on getting rich and gaining more territory

  • Controlled significant territory that was lost in the treaty

  • Monarchy was torn down and the royal family was exiled as part of treaty

  • Monarchy put most of the money for the budget into the military

  • Very significant wealth gap

  • Labor shortage before the war

    • Increase in manufacturing throughout the war helped ease the shortage

  • A lot of military and technological advancement and research came as a result of the war

  • During the war a massive manufacturing worker’s strike took place where over 2 million people walked out of their manufacturing jobs to protest for unionization, unsafe work conditions, low salary, and too many hours

    • The strike lasted two days until Parliament and the monarchy passed an act allowing unionization

  • Boost in economy after unionization and an increase in minimum wage as a result of the protests

  • Towards the end of the war, researchers learned a lot more about the abnormalities in blood flow and red blood cell count in the “Reds”

North and South Eirene
  • Formally known as the Eirene Empire

  • Massive imperialist empire with aspirations of continent-wide domination

  • Formerly on the gold standard, switched to paper currency after The Great War

  • Big mining and refining industries

  • Very plentiful oil supply, easily the staple of their economy

    • World’s leading supplier of oil

  • Vast desert in the west stretching across both North and South Eirene

  • Mountains along the eastern border and to the north

  • Forest along the eastern border as well

  • One of the first territories to build railroad tracks and steam engines

    • Eventually developed and started using diesel engines

  • First country to build tanks and other vehicles like mounted turrets for use in war

  • First country to use “modern” weaponry such as automatic rifles and machine guns

  • Heavy spending for military research and conquest

  • Started taking over countries to its North and West

    • They conquered Themis to their East but otherwise avoided the East due to the natural borders with the mountains and forest

  • The Northernmost parts of North Eirene get cold in the winter and receive pretty heavy snow

  • Summers are hot and dry

  • Severe drought conditions have led to a shortage in food

    • This is the main catalyst for going to war

  • After the Eirene Empire was defeated in The Great War, they were forced to give all conquered territory back and their original territory was split horizontally

  • Both North and South Eirene had democracies established

  • Both North and South Eirene are now neutral and cooperative with each other and other nations

  • Both countries are on the same paper currency after switching off the gold standard

  • More open to trading, exporting, and importing with other countries

  • The value of oil continues to increase after other countries begin developing diesel engines of their own

    • At the outset of the second war the value of oil increases even more

  • Continued expansion of the railways

  • More money put towards renewable energy after they were discovered by scientists

  • A lot of money going to expanding and modernizing the big cities

  • Significant contributions and advancements in scientific and technological research and development
