The Narrative Strategy

One Line

In a world of kill or be killed, four young soldiers must work together to survive a bloody and gruesome war. It won’t take long for Wolfpack Alpha to learn that they don’t have many allies left.

Story Premise

The continent is still recovering from The Great War that ravished all territories involved just three years ago. Now, with border tensions escalating between Nyx and Themis, it is only a matter of time before blood is shed once again. The violence is set to be even more brutal with the debut of both militaries’ genetically enhanced super soldiers. Taking advantage of a blood abnormality in a specific group of marginalized people known as “Reds", a drug that temporarily gives the “Reds” super human strength and stamina was recently invented to be used in war. Wolf Pack Alpha, the strongest unit in the Nyx army, is tasked with trying to defeat the Themis army and their group of elite enhanced soldiers nicknamed after the Seven Deadly Sins. Ghost, Nightfall, Rei, and Spider Lily have to work together to survive. Each side learns of the other’s transgressions and secrets as the fighting grows more brutal and inhumane. A single, burning question looms in the back of Alpha Pack’s mind: who are the real enemies here?

Story Synopsis

War has been declared between Nyx and Themis; two countries already ravished by The Great War that ended only three years prior. The automatic weapon has already quickly established itself as a very capable killer, but these countries have even bigger and bloodier goals in mind. Research on the ever-intriguing “Red Disease” has brought about a new age of combat, biological warfare. With the creation of a new drug, both Nyx and Themis are able to create soldiers with temporary superhuman powers for the battlefield. These weapons are as durable as they are powerful, anyone who stands in their way has likely drawn their last breath.

Leading the way for Themis is their group of superhuman soldiers nicknamed The Seven Deadly Sins. Each aspect of their name is apt, there are seven of them, they are deadly, and they are the incarnation of the ugliest aspects of humanity. Themis didn’t cut any corners when it came to creating weapons of mass destruction.

They each operate independently but their de facto leader is “Wrath”. After losing his sister at the start of the war, Wrath feels that it is his duty and obligation to wipe the entire nation of Nyx off the planet. His eyes will enchant you, his voice will calm you, and, before you know it, he will have killed you with the grace of a ballroom dancer. His catchphrase is: “Care to dance? It takes two to tango.”

And for Nyx, they augmented their best soldiers with the equipment and munitions of legends. Dubbed “Wolfpack Alpha”, they hold command of any battlefield they step onto.

At the head of Wolfpack Alpha is Spider Lily. She gets this nickname from the flower Lycoris Radiata. This flower symbolizes death and bad luck, often planted near the graves of the deceased. It is safe to say that she has earned her nickname, but at what cost?

Second in Command is Reaper. Again, it is safe to say that she certainly earned her nickname. A by the book military woman, she will stop short of nothing in order to accomplish her mission. Anyone who stands in her way will soon find out what it means to dance with the devil.

Then there’s Alpha Pack’s Stealth Combat Specialist, Ghost. Ghost is clever and cunning, choosing to attack from the shadows. A self-taught macro and microelectronics engineer, he has developed a system to pinpoint enemy locations using electromagnetic waves. He has also created a device that temporarily disables all electronics in the area by also utilizing electromagnetic waves. Every aspect of the battlefield is under his watchful eye. Where there are shadows, Ghost will be close by.

Finally, there’s Alpha Pack’s Long-Range Specialist, Nightfall. One of the most brilliant minds in the nation, Nightfall is well versed in physics, mathematics, and chemistry. She demonstrates her knowledge with her bullseye accuracy from almost any distance with her .50 caliber sniper rifle. She leaves nothing up to chance, anything she can take advantage of will be used to its maximum potential.

The war is just as bloody as advertised. But what may be even more disgusting is what is occurring behind the scenes.

Nyx has deployed a nationwide surveillance system that closely monitors any antigovernment activities. They also control all news outlets, ensuring that all news that is broadcast or published is filtered through the government beforehand. This has brought its fair share of critics, most of whom have mysteriously disappeared just days after voicing their opinions. A group named “Little Sister” have taken it upon themselves to spread awareness of misinformation and government suppression. While they mostly operate peacefully from the shadows, the time has come for more drastic, eye-catching methods to get their message out there.

Themis is not without their internal struggles either. While everything on the surface seems to be prim and proper, they are dealing with their own issues of domestic terrorism. They deal with these incidents quietly, disposing of any issues by sweeping them under the rug. Any threat to the illusion of peace and safety is dealt swift and unyielding justice. Dubbed “The Cleaners”, this group of undercover government agents is what holds together Themis’ namesake.

A war of attrition will test each side’s resilience as the other chips away at resources and territory. Nyx and Themis will target the other’s major military bases, supply chains, and means of production to cripple the enemy’s fighting power.

In the middle of the action, during an agreed upon truce for the Christmas holiday, the members of Alpha Pack will find themselves on an island celebrating New Year’s Eve. The fireworks may be the star of the show, but the most memorable aspect will certainly be what they stumble upon after. They crash the party of a Themis research facility; it is clear that Themis is hiding something very valuable from Nyx. Alpha Pack will take control of this research facility and the information inside of it. They hand the research over to their commanding officer not knowing how valuable this information is.

The war progresses, the blood continues to spill. One nondescript day of fighting goes by with nothing of note. Alpha Pack Commander, Colonel Yumi Kazuki, nickname The Crimson Princess, is about to head home when she is stopped by military police. She knew how much the information she was holding onto is worth and she knows what Nyx will do if they get their hands on it. She is labeled as a traitor and is wanted dead or alive.

Alpha Pack learns of this and arrives at a key decision. They must decide who their true enemy is. Is it the nation that they’ve been told to fight from the beginning, rife with their own issues of domestic terrorism and an illusion of peace and safety? Or is it the nation who has exploited them and turned them into fragile death machines, knee-deep in blood and tears?

Storytelling Strategy

The primary storytelling strategy will be voice-over and cinematics. The use of cinematics will be sparse and will be mostly used to bridge the major acts of the game together. The majority of the storytelling will be through voice-over narration and dialogue. The story will be told through the gameplay. In order to accomplish this, we must ensure that the level design is intriguing from both a gameplay and narrative standpoint. The player’s and characters’ motivations should line up at all times throughout the game and we must ensure that what is at stake is obvious. Voice over narration/dialogue is the smoothest way to integrate the story into the gameplay.
