The Big Idea

The year is 3018 of the Imperial Calendar. Much of the continent is still recovering from the brutality of The Great War that ended just three years prior. Research on a blood disease that affects a subset of the population has been exploited for military use. Now both the Nyx and Themis militaries have an elite squadron of genetically enhanced super-soldiers ready for battle. With tensions still high from the previous war, it is only a matter of time before blood is shed once more.


Project: Red War is an action role-playing game that takes place during the titular Red War. Through the perspectives of three young Nyx soldiers, the player will experience the brutality of a war between soldiers with superhuman abilities. Ghost, Nightfall, Rei, and Spider Lily are about to find out that war discriminates against no one.


Category

Project: Red War features the fast-paced, action-oriented combat reminiscent of Doom and Titanfall along with the thrilling and emotionally captivating action of a war story like Call of Duty or Battlefield. Project: Red War also features RPG and JRPG elements reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, NieR:Automata, and Tales of Arise and features a campaign told through multiple points of views such as in 13 Sentinels.


Platforms

The target platforms are PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.

PC is the most obvious choice because of hardware and player base. Home consoles such as the Xbox and PlayStation cover a market and demographic that is vital for this game’s success. The Nintendo Switch is the console of choice for many fans of JRPGs so that market is also crucial to this game’s success.


License

There is great potential for sequels to this game and other media adaptations. A sequel or a game set in the same world is one of the most obvious choices for turning this intellectual property into a franchise. This game’s world and characters lends itself well to both cinema and the anime industry. The characters are also unique enough to spawn their own franchises and/or spinoff games.


Play Mechanic

The core gameplay revolves around action and combat. Each playable character will have their own set of abilities and weaponry that aligns with a specific playstyle. The design of the levels will allow for these unique abilities and weaponry to shine while also maintaining an interesting atmosphere for the player to manipulate in combat. Combat will be quick and satisfying, relying on a combination of precise movements and timing as well as engaging combinations and skills. The player will be able to use an ability that boosts their character’s unique skills and abilities, giving them temporary superhuman strength and powers.


Technology

This depends on the developer/publisher, but the most accessible engines as of Spring 2023 are Unreal Engine 5 and Unity

Each game developer will have their own set of tools and possibly their own engine that they develop games in. If this project were to be picked up by a game studio, it would utilize their tools and libraries to bring this project to fruition.


Target Audience

This game is marketed towards a younger generation of experienced gamers who are not afraid of a challenge. The combat will be tough but rewarding. This game is meant for those who want a rich narrative experience interwoven into engaging gameplay. This game is targeted for fans of action (Western) RPGs and JRPGs. This game is accessible for any audience regardless of gender. The themes the game and its narrative interact with are meant for a more mature audience. This game will most certainly receive an Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rating of Mature 17+ for intense violence, blood and gore, and strong language.

Marketing Summary

Project: Red War will be a unique mix of compelling narrative and engaging gameplay. This game will redefine what it means to feature a narrative in a game without sacrificing the essential gameplay elements that make the medium special. The game will incorporate many different elements of successful Western RPGs and JRPGs. It will be told through the perspective of three different young soldiers who navigate the brutality of war in oppressive environments. At the end of the game, the player will question who the real enemy was the whole time!


Project Abstract

This project is a culmination of all of my work and studies throughout my college career. It serves as both a representation of my studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology and as a look into my ideal career path. What makes this game unique is the characters. This game will be told from three separate and distinct points of view, will establish relationships between the characters and the player, and will test the boundaries of said relationships and the human experience of war and tragedy. This game will utilize the advantages of its medium to hook the player into an engaging emotional experience as they navigate through the brutality of life in war.
